BMW Rosslyn plant installs a SunTank solar heating system
Pretoria 27 September 2007
SunTank, South Africa’s leading solar heating company, has just completed the installation of a commercial scale solar energy system for the BMW Rosslyn plant in Pretoria.
The solar energy system is designed to achieve a major reduction in the energy consumption of the paint shop section and enable ease its peak electricity load requirement. Over the past 9 years, Pretoria has provided an average of 8,5 hours of sunlight a day for 87 days of the year. This means that for an expected 87 days of the year, the system will be able to run at 100% capacity to generate hot water.
Frank Major, SunTank’s manager in charge of the project comments:
“BMW’s commitment to clean energy implementation is a clear indication of the new approach in the industrial sector in South Africa. Reputable companies can no longer afford to ignore issues such as rising energy costs and green house gas emissions”.
SunTank’s consistent investment in the development of skilled engineering, R & D and design professionals has turned it into the only company in Africa with a growing track record of industrial size installations of this kind.
Yoram Gur Arie, Managing Director of SunTank says:
“The growth in demand for solar energy products is straining capacity and presenting serious growth management challenges. South Africa’s solar heating industry will be required to put large capital investments into capacity building in order to be able to present the country with a reliable solution”.
